Seniors gain exam exemptions

On February 16, JAHS Principal Mike Aurin emailed all seniors to announce that seniors who have an 85% or higher year to date grade will be exempt from final exams. Adding to that, Aurin also announced to AP (Advanced Placement) teachers that any student who takes the AP exam in May will be exempt from final exams as well.

Aurin brought the idea to the building leaders earlier in the school year, and from there further discussions were held. Originally, Aurin presented an 80% or above year to date, but after some compromises between the building leaders, an 85% or above is the final requirement. Aurin also stressed that they will not be checking year to date grades until the first or second week in May in order to give students enough time. When asked what her opinions are on the new exemption,  senior Morgan Foster stated, “I think that this exemption is reasonable and will encourage students to finish strong for their senior year.”

As this is a new senior perk, this will be the trial year. For future grades there will be necessary changes made if need be. Senior exams will be held on May 17 and 18, followed by senior trip on May 19.
