JAHS senior night: girls and boys swim
Senior night was held on Jan. 15, 2022, as the Pioneers took on Indian Lake, Hilliard Darby, Carlisle, and Fairbanks. After recognizing these four senior athletes, the girls swim team took first place, and the boys took third.
Margaret Matessa
Maggie Matessa has been swimming since she was 5 years old. Her favorite memory was getting to watch Eli Stoll win at the State meet last year. Matessa was most motivated by her teammates and her coaches. Her favorite class was Mr. Clark’s Algebra 2 class because all her friends were in the class and Mr. Clark made it a really great year. After high school, she plans to go to college to study nursing. Awards she’s received for swimming include:
- Varsity Letter (2020, 2021, 2022)
- Second Team All CBC (2020, 2021, 2022)
- CBC Sportsmanship Award (2021)
Doug Nussbaum
Doug Nussbaum has been a competitive swimmer since he joined the Plain City Sharks for their inaugural season when he was 12 years old. His favorite swim memory is being a part of the first ever Jonathan Alder Men’s Relay, which qualified for Districts. Nussbaum loves being a student at JA because Mr. Carpenter makes calculus interesting and fun. His all time favorite class was Mr. Hughes’ AP Language and Composition course. After high school, he plans to attend college and major in business specializing in finance. Awards he’s received for swimming include:
- Varsity Letter (2020, 2021, 2022)
- CBC Sportsmanship Award (2022)
- CBC Special Mention (2022)
Eli Stoll
Eli Stoll has been swimming since he was 6 years old. His favorite memory from swimming is hanging out with the team on the bus rides to the meets. His favorite class is math with Mr. Piatak because he talks and cares for his students beyond the class. Stoll will be attending The Ohio State University and will be a member of OSU’s swim and dive team. He is undecided on a major. Stoll’s most notable awards include:
- State Champion in the 100 yard backstroke (2022)
- Three Time All American (twice in the 100 yard backstroke and once in the 200 IM)
Avery Wynk
Avery Wynk has been a swimmer since she was 10 years old. Her favorite memory from swimming is competing in the 2022 Sectional meet at CSG and qualifying as relays and individually for the District meet. Wynk is motivated by her teammates and coaches to work her hardest both in practice and at meets. Her favorite class was Mrs. Schrewe’s Robotics class because of all the different robots they got to build and the classroom environment. After high school, she plans to attend college to study environmental engineering. Awards she’s received for swimming include:

- Three Time District Qualifier
