The Jonathan Alder boys and girls soccer teams have had a very successful season so far, with the boys having a 10-1 record and the girls being 7-4.
The girls team had a rough start, losing all of their official matches in August. However, the girls have banded together to improve their record in September.
“August wasn’t as great for us,” says head coach Randy Spain. “Didn’t chalk up a win, but the team has grasped the new system of play and applying that. So far, in the month of September, we’re 4-0, and trying to make the fifth one here this week.”
The team has played three matches since then, and have continued this pattern.
Overall, the goal this year for the girls team is “to make it more of a positive environment, make it where everybody wants to be, and then as a team, we want to make it past the first round of tournament play,” says senior and team co-captain Lindsay Craig.
The boys team have also been on a hot winning streak. A talented group of returning players have helped support the team through the season.
“We had several players last year get awards,” head coach Jordan McMurray, says. “We have Fabrizio Fiorini. He made the all state team, and he’s a returning player for us. Mauro Muscelli was First Team All District last year, and he’s returning for us. Both of them are playing extremely well. Aidan Becker, I believe, was [second] team all conference and won some district awards as well, and he’s a returning player who’s been performing really well.”
The team has decided to shoot for the stars this season. “Last year, our goals were just to win districts, because we had never done that before, and I think that this year we have a really good chance of winning states. That’s our goal,” says senior team captain Aidan Becker. “And I think the whole team understands that.”
The future of both programs looks promising. As Spain says, “The future looks very bright for soccer. Lot of great people, a lot of great athletes, applying what they have in their eagerness to learn the system and play.”
