Jonathan Alder produced two successful golf teams this year, with both teams being undefeated and winning their CBC conferences.
Jackson Meriweather, a junior, says that he thinks their season went well, but does wish they got a little farther in the season.
“I feel it [the season] was pretty good… but it’s disappointing to not get into states again.”
Allison Funk, a sophomore, also says that the team accomplished a lot this year despite their circumstances.
“From going to winning CBC last year, to losing five seniors, to winning this year’s [CBC] is a big deal for all of us. I’d say our season went pretty well.”
The boys had new additions this season, but the team adjusted.
“[The chemistry was] really good. It’s kind of always tough to judge with two freshmen coming in, but I think we all got along pretty well, and I don’t think I would have really traded out anyone else.” Meriweather says.
Similarly, Funk also says the girls’ team is really devoted to each other. “I think we’re all really close, especially as of right now… we’re all really close and it’s fun to hang out. We’ll do things outside of golf too, not just inside of golf, to hang out, and have some friend time and team bonding.”
Funk thinks that the team’s closeness positively impacts their team on the course.
“You’re playing usually with one other person from your team, so I think knowing that person too kind of helps you keep going in your match,” she says. “If you’re having a bad shot, or a bad hole, they can talk to you and kind of tell you, it’s okay, it’s not the end of the world, keep improving your game.”
The boy’s golf team did team bonding meals after tournaments, which Meriweather says was his favorite part of the season.
“We got to go out to dinner… and so that was really fun just to go with the whole team experience of spending some good time with each other.”
Although this season is over, Funk is already preparing for next season, and wanting to recruit more people to the team.
“We’re losing two seniors this year, so that will be kind of hard for us, since they’re kind of our top players and so next year, that will take a little hit on us,” she says. “but we’re hoping to be able to find people that want to golf and come from that.”
