Breast Cancer Awareness takes the spotlight
October 29, 2015
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month. This annual international health campaign was started by major breast cancer charities to help increase funds for charities, as well as support for the people with cancer and those recovering from their successful battles with cancer. There are many organizations throughout the United States that work to increase the general public’s awareness of breast cancer all year. They also stress the importance of women being “breast cancer aware” for early detection.
The pink ribbon has become a popular symbol for the awareness of the disease. Social media outlets are even starting to add the ability for its members to show their support for breast cancer awareness. Getting people to go beyond just wearing or displaying a pink ribbon on social media is one of the main goals of many breast cancer awareness charities like the National Breast Cancer Foundation and the Stefanie Spielman Fund. These charities appreciate the support they currently receive, but they know that more steps need to be taken in the future.
Funding for cancer research and advocating for people around the United States to know how to catch cancer in its early stages are the two main goals of all breast cancer charities. Everyone knows somebody who has struggled with this disease. These charities want to stress the importance of finding a cure to it before more lives are tragically lost. Taking the opportunity to get the message out, especially during the month of October, is crucial to preventing and curing cancer.
