Hayden Anhedönia, professionally known as Ethel Cain, performed her third to last American show in Detroit, on September 17th. Her Willoughby Tucker Forever Tour has a total of 63 shows. I attended the show, and overall I’d rate it a 9/10. Viewers discretion is advised; there will be some inappropriate references.
Leading up to the concert
In March, during spring break, I found out that Ethel Cain was going on tour. I contacted my aunt, asking if she would be open to taking me. She said yes, and on the morning of ticket sales I spent all morning trying to get tickets. Originally, I thought I would be unable to get them. All of the tickets on Ticketmaster were sold out, so I ended up looking into getting tickets off a resale site, and it worked out! Even though they were really expensive, I got really good seats and was close to the stage.
Day of the concert
On the day of the concert, I made the three hour drive to Detroit. We thought the doors opened at 6, when in reality they opened at 7. Outside the theater was the longest line I have ever seen. It was about 5 blocks, and I thought we would never get in. But 30 minutes after the doors opened we made it in. We got merchandise, and the show started off with the band 9Million. Personally, not my favorite, but it wasn’t horrible.
The show
Finally at 9:15, Ethel Cain came out to an instrumental song, “Willoughby’s Theme” from her newest album, “Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You.” The whole show, there was lots of smoke which made really cool effects when blended with the different colors of the lights. The lights changed color every few minutes which I loved because it added to the visuals of the performance. At one point in the middle of one of her songs, someone fainted and she stopped the show to make sure they were okay, and started handing out water to everyone in the pit. This really showed that she has such a kind heart, and really cares about her fans.
Overall
Overall, the experience was an 8/10. The line was ridiculous, some of the people around me were obnoxious, and the price of the tickets was very high. But the concert was a 10/10. Earlier I gave an overall 9/10 to combine the 10 with the 8. I had been waiting for the day for months, and it lived up to my expectations. Seeing Ethel Cain has always been my dream, and I hope I can see her again.
