Snow days fall for JA

Riley Gruenbaum, School News Editor

Dear Editor,

Snow days have changed throughout the last couple of years. As snow days began to add up a few years ago, teachers began to assign “Blizzard Bags.” Blizzard Bags were assignments for the students  to do to make up for being absent from school for the day. In my opinion, this system did not cause too many problems. Although many students complained about having work to do, the missed day of school was able to count as a full day of school, which was  very beneficial because it prevented students from attending more school during their summer vacations.

After the first snow day system stopped, Jonathan Alder switched to the hour system, which consisted of a certain number of hours allotted for snow days. This system is still in use, as it was successful last year. Last year Jonathan Alder students did not have to attend any extra days of school that cut into their summer nor did they have to do school work on their snow days off. In my opinion, this hour system is very beneficial because it allows students to have days off of school without extra work.

Students living in Ohio have come to expect some snow days, which is their time to relax and enjoy their time off. This year because we have had a fairly mild winter, it has snowed very little, and we have only had two snow days, which happened to be be two days in a row. Because we have only had two snow days and we are not pushing our snow day limit, it has been easier to relax on the snow days that we have had. Teachers seem less rushed to catch up to their curriculum because we have only had two snow days thus far, which in turn creates less stress on the students as well.

Sincerely,
