Alder Band honors veterans

On Friday, November 11, also known as Veteran’s Day, seniors and marching band squad leaders from the Jonathan Alder Band program traveled to Plain City Elementary to perform for military veterans as well as the fourth graders at the school. The group of about 35 band members played a series of patriotic songs, including Eternal Father, America, the Star Spangled Banner and America the Beautiful. A group of veterans who served in different wars and branches of the military spoke to the group, explaining what exactly a veteran is and the importance of thanking veterans for their service.

When asked about their favorite part of the day, senior Tommy Madigan responded, “I enjoyed when one of the veterans played Taps, and also how polite everyone was when they gave us food afterwards.” Junior Katie Grigsby said, “The entire event was very humbling, as Veteran’s Day is a reminder of the thousands of people that laid down their lives for our safety. It was interesting to hear from the different veterans that spoke that day and also to see an award given to a WWII veteran.”

After the ceremony closed, the band, veterans and other community members who attended were invited to the old elementary school for lunch.
