Alder golf swings into gear

The Jonathan Alder boys and girls golf teams have been off to a great seasons start so far. The boys team is coached by science teacher Mitch Koester and math teacher Matthew Carpenter. The girls are coached under the teachings of math teacher Darren Clark and Ray Hustek.

The boys team consists of seniors Jon Peters, Logan Woods and Zach Walbom; juniors Zach Starr, Tyler Unger, Jacob Lombardi, Cal Duckworth and Tommy Madigan; sophomores Joey Petrella, Zach Otto and Zach Headings; freshman Chris Osborne, Colton Laff, Jon Duckworth and Hayden Fry.

The boys team usually participates in around 18 matches a season and about six invitationals. Most invitationals take place before the school year starts, because they require 18 holes.  On Mondays the Jonathan Alder boys golf team practices at Buck Ridge golf course and on Wednesdays they shoot at Ables driving range. When the team plays a round it usually takes two hours and when they go to the driving range it typically takes an hour and a half.

“Our goals for this season are: to be competitive in the league and finish in the top three. Also to win the Madison County tournament, qualify for districts, or get at least one individual to qualify for districts,” stated Koester.

The girls team is made up of 13 athletes including seniors Annie Maurer, Charlotte Palmer and Michaela Hostetler; juniors Mackenzie Heimlich, Emily York, Sarah Gentil and Jordan Ballard; sophomores Maddie McMillen and Maddie Conley; freshman Lydia Lions, Sarah Harp, Abby Doza and Nataile Eudaily.

When asked who their rivals are, Heimlich replied, “North Union used to be our biggest rival but now we try to compete with Fairbanks.”

The Jonathan Alder girls team just recently won the title of the Madison County Champions. This so far is contributing to their winning season and they are hoping to finish their last few weeks on a strong note.
