Volleyball and soccer district finals fall on Halloween

Both the girls volleyball and girls soccer teams’ district finals fell on the same day this year on Halloween. Last year, volleyball and soccer district finals also fell on the same day, but both teams lost and became runners-up in the district.

The girls volleyball played first on Saturday, and came home with the win against London with the scores of 25-12, 25-13, and 25-23, with a final block from senior Karlee Reynolds. When asked if she expected to win, head coach Taryn Fuller stated, “At the beginning of the season, the team set many goals and one of them was to win districts. We know that we don’t expect anything, but with hard work and determination, we can achieve anything!”

The girls volleyball team is ranked 2nd in the state, but when asked if winning states could be expected, Fuller stated, “We know that every game is a challenge, and we don’t take anything for granted. That being said, we’re very focused on this next game and this game only, so we don’t talk about anything further until that challenge is met.”  The girls went on to beat Bishop Hartley in the regional semi-finals 3 sets to 1 and West Holmes 3 sets to 1 in the finals. They will move on to state semis this Thursday, November 12th.

The girls soccer team also played in the district finals on Halloween night against Bishop Hartley. With a 2-1 win in over-time, this became the first girls soccer team from Alder to win districts. Senior Alivia Milesky said, “There’s nothing more I could have asked for my senior year. It has always been a team goal to win districts, and now we’ve made it.” The winning goal was scored by junior Lily Hess and when asked to describe her feelings in that moment, she was unable to explain. “There’s no better feeling,” she stated. “I was so shocked and excited at the moment. It was indescribable.” The girls soccer team is scheduled to played against Indian Hill on November 3rd and ended their season with a 4-1 loss.
