This past Friday, May 8, the softball team celebrated their senior night against Benjamin Logan in a Central Buckeye Conference crossover game. The girls won this game 9-1, leaving them 13-9 overall and 10-5 in the CBC.
With their record for last year being 15-12, the seniors this year had big shoes to fill. Fortunately, they have successfully stepped into that leadership role and made the team feel like family.
“A big part of it is making sure that everyone’s on the same page,” senior Maggie McCoy says, “not leaving people behind and having people all know exactly what’s going on at all times.”
The girls have improved since their last season, winning their games against London, Fairbanks, and Indian Lake which last year they had lost. They are currently third on their side of the CBC.
Junior Owyn Johnson says that the seniors are the inspiration for this hard work. “The current seniors have really inspired me to just be really welcoming to people. They’re also really hard working and that’s inspired me to be really hard working.” Johnson says.
The seniors have made many accomplishments throughout their season, such as catcher McCoy being named the March CBC Student-Athlete of the Month, and pitcher Macy Pruitt signing with Grace Christian University to continue her softball career.
“The team dynamic this year is a lot more close-knit than it normally is.” Johnson says. “Everybody is comfortable around each other and we just like to have a lot of fun and play a lot of softball.”
The girls final regular season game is Friday, May 15th at Olentangy Orange. This will mark the end of the senior’s final softball season for Alder.
McCoy leaves words of wisdom to all incoming players: “Don’t let your performance define you or your mood because it doesn’t.”
