On March 27, 2025, Nintendo announced a long-awaited sequel to the hit game Tomodachi Life. The sequel is known as Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream. The upcoming game was given a special Nintendo Direct on January 29, and the release date was announced to be April 16. This is almost 13 whole years after the release of Tomodachi Life, which was released on April 18, 2013 on the 3DS console.
The new game is going to be compatible with both the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch 2 systems.
Tomodachi Life is described by Nintendo as follows: “What happens when friends, family, and celebrities become MII characters and live together on an island? Tomodachi Life happens! Start by creating MII characters and customising everything about them. Have fun recreating your best friend, your favourite actor, mum and dad, co-workers…whoever! Then watch as they rap, rock, eat donuts, fall in love, break up, go shopping, play games, and live their crazy MII lives.”
MIIs, the focus of the Tomodachi Life series, are customizable avatars that were first introduced on the Wii console in 2006. They have been used in various games since their creation, but have been used less and less as more consoles have been released.
After watching the direct, I believe that Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is going to push the series in the right direction. A majority of the new features are going to have a positive influence on both the game and the overall series.
LGBTQ+ Representation
One of the most well received features that was announced was the addition of same-sex relationships and genders. The direct showed that when creating a MII, there is now an option to select the MII’s dating preferences. This lets MIIs like multiple genders, one gender, or no one at all. This feature was not included in Tomodachi Life, which locked MIIs into relationships with just the other gender. The direct also showed the existence of non-binary MIIs.
I think this feature is an amazing addition. LGBTQ+ representation is important in the fight for equality everywhere, and by adding this representation, Nintendo is helping members of the LGBTQ+ community feel seen in their interests.
MII Friendships/Relationships
In Tomodachi Life, if you wanted two MIIs to become friends, it was basically just sheer luck. There was no solidified way to make two MIIs meet each other. Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream changes this. The direct revealed that instead of waiting for a MII to ask to be friends with someone, you can just pick up that MII and drop them next to another one. How well they get along is still up to chance, but this feature allows for the player to have some level of control over who is acquainted with who.
I think this is probably one of if not the best feature that was announced. Whenever I play the original game, I always get extremely frustrated that I can’t make two people become friends. This game seems to fix that annoying issue.
Customization
Another well received feature announced in the direct is the high amount of customization that will be available in the game. Compared to the last game, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream will add more customization options for MIIs, pets and the island itself.
For MIIs, there are new options for facial features, hair and makeup. They also added the ability to give your MIIs ears, a feature that has never been seen in any games that include MIIs. Being able to customize MIIs more is a game-changer and allows for more accurate representations of what you’re trying to replicate in MII form. The only thing I’m concerned about with this feature is the ability to draw on facial features. I’m mainly worried about what people are going to draw.
For pets, they revealed that you can draw them. In the pervious game, you could give MIIs either a cat or a dog voucher, but the style and type of pet was limited to those two options. In Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, the pet that you create will follow your MIIs around as a 2D image. I think this feature is adorable, but, similar to the drawing of facial features, I’m a little concerned about what people are going to make as their pets.
Island wise, the game will allow you to change the landscaping and the look of houses, floors and other structures. This will also let you change the shape and lay-out of your island. This is a major step-up from Tomodachi Life, which didn’t allow for island customization at all. Similar to the other customization features, I am, again, concerned about what people are going to do with this.
Lack of a Music Hall
However, there is one feature (or, more accurately, lack of a feature) that is not good for the game.
My favorite building in Tomodachi Life is by far the music hall. You were able to give your MIIs one of eight songs to perform, and you could alter the lyrics of the songs to your liking. You could also assemble groups of different MIIs by giving them the same song.
This feature was a lot of fun, and is also how I found out about Tomodachi Life in the first place. I was exposed to the game from a video of MIIs performing a song in the music. In other words, this feature boosted the popularity of the series and was extremely entertaining.
However, the music hall was not mentioned in the Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream at all. It also wasn’t seen in any of the snapshots and montages that were shown either. For me, this is extremely saddening. I think that it will lower engagement with the game, and make people bored way quicker.
Conclusions
The features mentioned in this article are just the tip of the iceberg. There were so many things mentioned in the direct, such as new buildings, little quirks and so much more. Overall, I think this game is going to be phenomenal. I am excited to see what they added that they didn’t announce, and hopefully that includes a music hall.
